Glow little glow-worm, glimmer-glimmer

So Olivia got a glow-worm at my baby shower. I obvioulsy knew what it was but couldn't help but think that the glow-worms of my day were much cuter...

This is what the one she got looks like now

idk, what do you think? Then mitch and I also bought her this seahorse glow-worm. I guess it's technically a glow-seahorse...but it's much cuter and the music it plays is infused with watery bubble noises, she loves this horse

we got her the turquoise one instead of the pink one only because it matched her bedding...otherwise you know mitch would have insisted on pink!

Reflection

March 9, 2009 9:25 pm
Olivia Marie
7'8 19 inches long

So as you read in the previous post there have been some babies born lately in my family. I also have an old friend (shout out to Jamie Golden Martin) that had a baby the previous Tuesday, my old roommate Shannon the week before and Mitch's old neighbor has also had a baby in the last week. It's raining babies apparently! Anyways as Olivia is only a few days away from turning 7 months old I find myself completely baffled as to how my baby has become so old already! Now 7 months really isn't all that old but I guess with all these little newbies around it makes her seem giant in comparison. It literally feels like yesterday that I gave birth to her and now she's crawling all over the place, pulling herself up to stand from sitting, babbling like she's having a very important conversation with you, eating solid foods, just becoming more of a little person by the day...less of a baby and it makes me so sad!

Watching all the milestones has been awesome. Her first cooing, smile, first laugh, holding on to toys, rolling over, babbling, sitting up, crawling, pulling up. I think I cried to see her do all these things for the first time. Then yesterday when she was showing off her crawling skills to Mitch's family, Grandma Sue or "Sparkle" started to cry and I just felt all choked up inside...it's really happening, she's growing up. I just wish somehow we could pick what age we'd like her to be on any given day. I'd like to hold my little newborn every now and again...but I guess you can't turn back time. I was talking to my mom on the phone yesterday while she held my new little nephew Liam. I heard little squeaks and sighs in the background "is that the baby"? My heart literally ached to remember when she was that small. I just wish I could have been there to hold him too.

I was thinking today as I nursed Olivia, silently praying she'd go down easily for her nap, that your expectations of your children is so different than the reality. She of course is only 7 months old so this realization is a bit premature but valid all the same. Before the baby comes you have all these ideas about how she's gonna be and how your life will be day to day with a baby. I remember thinking I was going to have this mellow calm baby and we would have mellow and calm days together. You think you have it all figured out, you think you have planned for everything and once that baby comes you realize that whoever they are is only about half influenced by you and the other half is just whoever they are.

They decide how things will go on a daily basis and at least in Olivia's case the only thing you can count on is her feisty stubborn personality. She is a good baby but she definitely has an iron will. She is stubborn and persisitant and feisty. She is awesome but can be exhausting. My mom likes to blame me for giving into all her whines and whimpers, I made her this way, I spoil her. She even used me as an example to warn my sister about letting your baby control your life....whatever. Maybe I did have a hand in her being so demanding...but I think it's just who she is. I mean with me as her mother and Mitch as her father...you had to know she'd at least be a little neurotic. She is a happy girl most of the time unless she is tired. Then she wants you either holdling her or right beside her. She needs convincing to go to sleep, she doesn't just go to sleep on her own, unless she's in the car. Otherwise she is smiling and happy and just wants to be in on the action, no matter what that may be.

Oh baby, baby...please don't grow up so fast!

3 Things....

First and foremost I got Munchy's Halloween costume today and it is to die for cute! I can't divulge what she's gonna be just yet but let me just say you probably have never seen a baby dressed as this for Halloween before....Oh, Oh, Oh...I realize most of you who read this may already know and may have already seen her in said costume...but let's just pretend tons of people care enough to read my blog!

Second congratulations to my sister Katie and bro-in-law Ian on the arrival of their itty bitty man Mr. Liam Jackson...he has a middle name but ehhhh I like just plain Liam Jackson better! So I am officially an Aunt 5 times! To all boys mind you! Robert (9) Kamren (7) David (3) Abraham (14 months) and little Liam (2 days). Which I would like a neicey but at the same time that makes my Livia the only girl which is special. And I guess I am unofficially kinda an Aunt 6 times because on the same day just a few hours before Mitch's brother Matt and his wife Kindra gave birth to their little boy Ezra David Benveniste. How weird is that huh? Olivia has cousins who are exactly the same age...well Ezra is a few hours older. Mitch and I have been together for 7 years so whatever Ezra is my nephew too!

And third. Urghhh miss Olivia is driving me crazy lately. She is crawling (more or less) and also can pull herself up. So instead of sleeping she seems to think she needs to practice these skills. Waking herself up to do so. And then well she should be napping right now but oh no as soon as I laid her down her eyes fly open and she's rolled over and sits up and is currently screaming her anti-nap protests in the next room. Such a little rebel revolutionary...holding her anti-rest campaigns to anyone who will listen, currently all her stuffed animals and me irritated in the next room. AGhhhhhhhhhhh go to sleep! I also think she's probably going to get a tooth any day now so she's super crabby these days...so she NEEDS TO NAP!!!!!! There is no way to convince her of this, I know she sees me as some evil dictator trying to impose my will upon her. So I am yet again "trying" (most likely unsuccessfully) to do the "crying out" but I am a big pansy push over and I will probably cave in about another 15-20 minutes.

Cute little bratty rugrat that she is these days....Olivia shut your pie hole!!!!!!!

Beautiful baby loves beautiful people

So I believe it might be official that miss baby has a taste for country music. Yeah, I know, country music----bleh. It's alright but...well just alright. Thanks to Aunt Megan I have discovered that miss Liv really, I mean REALLY likes Taylor Swift. Let's just all be thankful it's not Miley Cyrus because the sight or sound of that child...oh her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. She is brutally obnoxious/annoying. So here's the story. I am driving Megan to some Football game or whatever and she, of course, has to take over the stereo for like the duration of the car ride...I mean honestly we could be driving to Wal-mart which is seriously like one minute away and she has to command whatever we are listening to. Anyways she pops in some mix CD which thankfully did not have any "Miley" on it but did have that garish new Black Eyed Peas song on it. "I've got a feeling"... no offense if you like that song, I just well...I don't. It probably has to due with the fact that the guy just says the same thing over and over relentlessly and redundantly and Megan for probably a 2 week period played that song relentlessly and redundantly. I am not exaggerating, if she likes a song she will just keep it on repeat for like an hour. But anyways that day it was Taylor Swift. She's not bad I guess. I think when she first arrived on the whole tween scene, which I am familiar with again because I have been living with Megan for the past year, I didn't like her because she was pretty and cute and thin. Mind you I was fat and pregnant and feeling anything but pretty.I mean her voice isn't all that spectacular. I guess it's good enough but nothing special. But she does play the guitar and does write her own songs so that's admirable. Anyways after that whole debacle at the VMA's with Kayne West basically dogging the little girl, I guess my heart went out to her. I mean she's what like 17? 18? And here is this grown man telling her she didn't deserve to win, it was rather heartbreaking to see...she didn't know what to do or say, it was sad. Anyways "TANGENT". So Megan turns on the "fearless" song and the restless fussy baby in the backseat quiets down and then begins to softly babble along....So sweet...so cute! At first I thought it might be just a fluke but Taylor Swift has come on the radio a few times since and it always has the same outcome...baby singing! Doesn't matter which song, as long as it's Taylor. Here is my theory...she loves little kids. She sees them or hears them and she lights up and squeals with delight. Taylor sounds kinda like a 10 year old. Very angelic sounding voice. So my baby likes a teeny bopper already! Oh boy...so it begins!

That old familar feeling

I am feeling...depressed today. And the recognition of that depressed feeling makes me even more depressed. Being someone who has struggled with "depression" before the fact that I feel it rolling in slowly like storm clouds, isn't too reassuring. I remember reading Prozac Nation and the author likened depression to a quote in The Sun Also Rises. Someone asked the main character how he went bankrupt and he answered "gradually then suddenly". She said that's how depression hits "gradually... then suddenly" and it's such a great analogy because it really is true. You start to feel foggy and then all of a sudden you realize you're surrounded in a thick haze and you can't see 3 feet in front of you. It's probably due to all that's going on in my life and the fact that Olivia has been crazy irritable and super needy lately has not helped the matter. So should we play catch up? I don't really like to discuss things in my life that pertain Mitchell and I but I can't really explain how I am feeling with an explanation. Okay....

Here is the abbreviated version;

June 2008 Mitch graduated from UCSB
June 2008 Mitch and I got pregnant.
October 2008 we told our parents and they suggested we move home. Mitch's parents said we could live with them until Mitch could get a job. I was working at the hotel full time and making pretty good money and although the idea of moving back home was appealing I did not want to quit my job. I did not want to put the burden of supporting us solely on Mitchell. He said it would be okay, his parents said it would be okay...I knew it probably wasn't going to be okay but I agreed I would quit my job and we would move in with his parents in November.
November 2008 we move in and Mitch begins working on and off for his Dad. It isn't consistant work, a week or two here and a week there...much needed money but not secure enough to move out on our own. I tried to find a part-time job, I applied a couple of places but nobody called back and who would hire a pregnant woman?
January 2009 no more work at his Dad's work and he begins to look for a job with no success.
February 2009 heavily pregnant...ready to pop...baby showers, birthing classes etc. Mitch still no job
March 2009 Mitch gets a temp job with Wachovia Financial...they pay alright but not enough to make having a college degree and 5 additional AA degrees feel worth it...whatever.
April 2009 Mitch hates his job, we are new parents to lil Livia
May 2009 Mitch hates his job and we are starting to figure the parenting stuff out
June 2009 Mitch hates his job, sister Megan graduates High School, sister Ashley moves back in as well
July 2009 more chaos than usual due to more people and Megan also being out of school
August 2009 ditto and Mitch also gets laid off. So he is now home full time to harass and irritate sisters...chaos, chaos, chaos, fighting, fighting, fighting
September 2009 a delicate talking to about how it might be a good idea to find an alternative place of residence. At least the talk to me was delicate...They spoke to Mitch separately, I don't know how that went.
Late September 2009...yesterday...Olivia and I moved in with my parents.

You can't blame them for asking us to move on. I mean we were there way longer than I'm sure they expected. Way longer than I expected that's for sure. I remember a conversation with my Dad about a month before Olivia was due and he asked me how it was going to be living with everyone and the baby. I felt sort of shocked. I always thought we would be out of there before she was born and I was also in a little bit of denial about the fact that I was going to give birth in 4 short weeks. But seeing how Mitch did not really have any steady income and I don't think he was all that jazzed about moving out anyways (Mama's boy)I guess it was a valid conclusion to draw that we would most likely still be there once she was born. Then there was all the freaking out about that.

Would I be able to bond with my baby?
Would I ever be able to be alone with my baby?
How would I be able to deal with people constantly looking over my shoulder when it came to my mothering skills?
It's so loud at their house, would the baby be able to sleep?
Would the dogs bark everytime she cried?
Would the dogs be aggressive towards her?
Would she keep the whole house awake when she wakes up every 2 hours?
Would People interfere?
etc
etc

All my worries were for nought. They totally allowed me to spend as much time alone with her in my room as I wanted. They didn't interfere. The baby did fine with the noise (when she was little anyway). She slept as well as any newborn (erratic, sometimes good sometimes not). The dogs were fine, Bogie loved her and Zoe seemed disinterested. Her cry wasn't really loud enough to carry much farther than our room. In fact I rarely left the room and the baby spent most of her time tucked away in the bedroom. I found out later that the rest of the house found it kind of odd, maybe even rude? Worried that I might be depressed or anti-social. Well I did have a little bit of baby blues the first 2 weeks and well I have been anti-social my whole life soooo...IDK...I was exhausted and spent any free-time I had sleeping and getting the baby to nap usually took some major effort and if she was asleep...I wasn't about to move her, I didn't care if there was a national emergency..."my baby is sleeping".

Anyways those months were also riddled with about a once a month Emily/Mitchell blow-out fight and when you live in a house with 4 other people...well people get involved and people have opinions. The sisters usually always took my side and would start their own fight with Mitch about it and that led to parents having to intervene and well as you might imagine, kinda a nightmare for poor Tony and Sue. Oh and right after the baby was born Tony got diagnosed with "Valley Fever" and was sick and out of work for a few months and not even sure if he could return to work. Then Grandma Diana (frequent house guest) also had to go through a second round of Chemo during all of this as well. It just has been a crazy year for the Benvenistes to say the least. But they always made me feel like part of the family and never showed me anything but love and understanding. It baffles my mind that they were able to be loving and gracious enough to let me (not related) live with them. And despite anything that may have been going on to make life stressful I always loved living with them, I always felt at home with them.

But yeah anyways I am home. Mitch has until the end of next month to move out. And he is again working with his dad's employer and so hopefully he can make money for us to move out together sometime in the near future. And living at home is going to be fine and probably really good for Olivia and I both. But I don't enjoy change. So this is hard right now. And the being apart from Mitchell is hard. And the not seeing Ashley everyday is hard. And knowing that Olivia might be confused about the whole thing is hard. And knowing what to do in my free time is hard.

It will be good for Olivia to be with my family for a while. It will be good for my parents to be with Oliva for a while. It's peaceful at home. It's quiet at home. There is work-out equipment so maybe I can finally get my bum back in shape. Mom always buys me any food I want :). I am near the park so I can take Olivia for walks without a fear of being shot (Orangevale is well...questionable at best). It will be good, it will be fine and I am grateful for the opportunity to potentially improve my life. It's going to be an adjustment for all of us my parents, me, Olivia, Mitch and the Benvenistes...but hopefully it will be okay.

So in light of all of this I think I am allowed to feel a little sad...maybe even depressed

A lovely subject

More pictures of our extraordinary child. And nevermind that her onesie in some of the pics says "asshole"....well his sister Allison thought it was funny. It has stick figures one that says baby, mommy and asshole. ha ha at the time she gave it to me it was funny. And Olivia only slept in it so it's not like I'm taking my child places where she has obscenities on her clothing!

New camera pics

So Mitch and I bought a fancy DSLR. Actually I don't know how fancy it is but it's fancy to me and you are on my blog so it's "fancy" to you! It's got the detachable lens and all that so whoooo-hoo. Mitch bought it in an effort to create a new hobby for me and also to capture the moments of our most beautiful baby girl! So here are a few
